Mute Swan (Cygnus olor)

The Mute Swan (Cygnus olor) is a relatively common sight in and around my town of Burlington, Ontario. This swan is smaller than the Trumpeter Swan, but larger than the Tundra Swan, and is notable for its orange bill black face. The Mutes and the Trumpeters are the most common in my area.

In Southern Ontario, Mute Swans are monitored by the Long Point Waterfowl Researchers, who use small airplanes to monitor swan populations around Lake Erie, Lake Ontario and Lake St. Clair. Surveys show that between 2003 and 2005 the population doubled from 1,373 to 2, 737 swans.

These images were taken with my Nikon D50 digital SLR with a Nikon AF-S VR 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6, an excellent combination for carrying around.
